it’s halloween - trunk or treat

What began as a creative way to safely celebrate Halloween in the years after COVID has now become an anticipated tradition at our school - Trunk or Treat which is part of the school’s = annual PTO Spooky Fun Fair and fundraiser. The school parking lot comes alive with rows of cleverly decorated car trunks, games, and festive activities that bring families together in a spirit of community and fun. Children dash from trunk to trunk in their costumes, collecting candy and showing off their spooky style, while parents reconnect over the laughter, decorations, and the joy of seeing a tradition born from challenge grow into a cornerstone of fall festivities.

Quick & Simple Tips for Busy Parents

Fun Halloween ring toss game

Our super simple idea came together quickly and cheaply

  1. Pick a time-efficient setup (and prep in advance!)

Do as much as you can at home before heading to the event—this saves stress and time. We decorated our trunk ahead of time, shut it, and simply drove over to the school. When we arrived, all we had to do was roll out the tongue prop and we were ready to go. Honestly, we could have left it at that, but we plugged in our EGO battery backup from Lowe’s to power an inflatable spider. Totally off-theme, but the kids loved it—and that’s really what counts! 2. Choose a simple theme (or reuse items you already have)

You don’t need to spend hours or a fortune to make your trunk look great. We went with a classic monster mouth—using black construction trash bags for the mouth and a dollar-store red tablecloth for the tongue. To top it off, we added monster eyes and teeth for an instant wow factor. The rest was easy—we just filled in with a few spare props from our old house decorations. Quick, affordable, and the effect was big!Go for low-effort yet eye-catching ideas like a monster mouth, mummy, or a “Candyland” setup using everyday items or DIY materials Giggles Galore.

  3. Add quick interactivity or multisensory features

A little atmosphere goes a long way—and sound is one of the easiest ways to set the mood. We brought along our Anker Bluetooth speaker and downloaded a few creepy favorites like the Halloween theme and the Harry Potter soundtrack. It took almost no effort, but the music instantly made our trunk feel more immersive and kept the kids coming back for the spooky vibes. If you don’t want to buy a bunch of new music, you can use your phone for this clean-yet-cool Halloween playlist that’s more grown-up but still fun:

YouTube’s “Trunk or Treat Playlist Clean Halloween Songs” includes tracks like Monster Mash, Spooky Scary Skeletons, Somebody’s Watching Me, Thriller, This Is Halloween, and even The Addams Family theme—perfect for tweens who want spooky without being too scary m.youtube.com+1.

  4. Plan for inclusivity and a little extra fun
It’s always thoughtful to offer allergy-safe treats or non-food goodies like stickers, glow sticks, or small toys so every child feels included. My friend would also always bring along simple games for the kids—like a Halloween-themed ring toss—which kept them entertained and gave families another reason to linger at our trunk. It doesn’t have to be elaborate; just a small extra touch makes the night feel even more festive and welcoming. Giggles Galore+11Parents+11littledoveblog.com+11.

  5. Keep lights and props practical

The right lighting can make your trunk pop, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. We’ve used these motion-activated lights with sound plugged into our trusty EGO battery, which always grabs the kids’ attention. If you want something simpler, puck lights do the trick, or you can keep it really simple by scattering a few spare flashlights inside the trunk. Whatever you choose, the key is to make sure your decorations are visible and safe without adding stress to your setup. Real SimpleGeekMom.

  6. Use recyclable or reusable decorations

One of the easiest ways to save both time and money is to repurpose items you already have. We’ve raided our stash of old party supplies, borrowed from last year’s Halloween décor, and even broken down cardboard boxes to create backdrops. If you want something that’s both easy and reusable year after year, kits like this Halloween trunk decorating set are a great investment. They pack flat, set up in minutes, and give you a big impact with minimal effort—perfect for busy parents who want to show up without the stress.
